Earlier this year, Emily, the gorgeous mama and face behind the camera over at Emily Hernandez Photography, contacted me to see if I was interested in photographing the birth of her 5th daughter. I think I literally squealed when I read her message, as documenting a birth had been on my bucket list for a looooooooooong time. As a photographer herself, Emily felt it was time to give her husband a break from camera duty during the birth of their last baby, and I was honored to be on call for this super special event. As we started to get closer to go time, I had butterflies in my stomach and my nervousness was sky high – “what if I didn’t make it in time? what if I woke up to a million missed calls from Emily and blew the whole thing? what if I forgot to charge my battery and it died in the middle of the birth? what if my pictures stunk and I am just not cut out for birth photography?” Thankfully, all of these worries were put to rest on the night of July 15, as I was able to be there, fully charged camera in hand, for sweet Mia Faith’s entrance into this world. Being in the delivery room with Emily and her husband, Carlos kind of felt like a fun little coffee date – lots of laughing and chatting, story sharing, good music playing quietly – you see, Emily is a pro at giving birth and the atmosphere was unbelievably relaxed. I felt instantly comfortable and was in complete awe of these amazing parents and their excitement and joy over the anticipation of meeting their 5th princess. In fact, I had so much fun, I didn’t want to leave and totally invited myself back to the hospital in the morning to document Mia meeting two of her big sisters for the first time! I rode the new baby high for days, and after going through all of the photos from this experience, it’s a given – I must do more of this. Please, please, please – take the time to browse through the photographic journey of Mia’s birth.
I will never be able to thank Emily and Carlos enough for trusting me to capture the memories of this special day for them. It truly was a life-changing experience for me, and one I will never, ever forget. Like I said, I have to figure out a way to do more birth photography. Happy, Happy Birthday, sweet Mia Faith.
