Hi there. I’d like you to meet my friend, Robin. Robin is the amazingly talented owner of Picsy Photography and since we started our businesses only a few months apart and live only a short distance from each other, many people think we’re fierce competitors. But it’s not like that. Not even close.
You see, while we work in a currently very popular industry, full of fun, creative moms turned photographers just like us; we all own our own businesses, and therefore, work by ourselves. With no work water cooler, teachers’ lounge, weekly happy hour or even another person to collaborate with, it can get pretty lonely. That’s where I lucked out. I have the perfect work friend – Robin is also a mom, wife, sister, daughter, friend, and former teacher and she just gets it. We don’t get caught up in all of the petty competition stuff – having each other’s support and friendship is so much more important than that.
Another huge plus that comes with having the best photographer buddy is that we get to take each other’s family photos. As the person with the camera always in hand, it’s impossible to be both behind and in front of the camera at the same time. Plus, as I’ve learned – getting all of my settings right on the camera and handing it over to my husband just doesn’t work – I spend more time running back and forth, checking to see how each image looks than I do relaxing and truly allowing myself to be captured on camera with my kiddos. Robin and I talked about this for months, and just recently did we do our family photo session swap. Finally, the two of us were going to get those family shots that are impossible to get when we both spend the bulk of our time behind the camera. We were SO excited!
The day of Robin’s session was perfect – a gorgeous, sunny, 70 degree Friday afternoon. Robin had coordinated her family’s clothes perfectly, she had her hair and makeup done and looked gorgeous, Josie, her simply adorable 2 year old gave me a hug right off the bat and we were ready to have some fun. Check out Robin’s gorgeous family below – aren’t they simply stunning?!?!
I mean, c’mon – no family should be this photogenic and attractive! Thank you so much Hansens – love you guys!
Now, preparing for my family’s session was waaaaaaaaaaaay harder than I realized it would be. I spend countless hours photographing families during your own photo sessions, but it’s been a long time since I’ve done the grunt work that goes into getting a family of 5 ready for our own session. When I take your pictures, I just get to show up and be amazed at how wonderful you look and start having fun. Oh man – I spent so much time shopping and coordinating our outfits, then worrying about how I was going to do my hair and makeup, do my girls’ hair, hoping the kids would behave, trying to convince my husband that we would love these photos later… It’s a ton of work! Plus, I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty picky when it comes to judging photos of myself – so many times, I just hate how I look. I knew Robin would do an amazing job, but I’m still pretty critical of myself. After seeing how amazing Robin looked on her session day, I made the best photo session prep decision ever – I also had my hair and makeup done by professionals – Jacqui from Styles by Jacqui and Tiffany from Flawless by Tiffany worked miracles. Seriously, if you have the chance to let yourself get pampered before a session, I highly recommend these ladies! Anyway, the point of this whole story is that I stepped into your shoes and it was such a beneficial experience for me – I have a whole other blog post full of thoughts on this to come later. Plus, my family now has gorgeous family photos to put up all over our new house and precious memories captured forever.
