Wowsa, has it been a long time since I’ve updated the blog. Here it is April and my new year’s resolution of weekly updates has faded into a distant memory. So, when I was asked to join a Blog Circle with a group of some great photographers, I was thrilled – this was exactly the motivation and push I needed to keep up with blogging! What is a Blog Circle? Basically, each month we are all presented with a theme, and it is up to us to interpret that theme in our way, with our own ideas, thoughts and of course – our own pictures! Then, at the end of each blog post, we post the link to the next photographer in the circle. It’s a great way to step out of our comfort zone, push ourselves to try new things and challenge ourselves as photographers. I’m so excited!

Of course, it’s also more work to do, and I’m sure all of you can relate to just feeling utterly overwhelmed at times – you all know I feel that way most of the time! So,while the theme for March was “green” – my favorite color – and I took the cutest pictures of my girls, the deadline came and went with no blog post from me. I just couldn’t seem to find the time -I had too many pictures to edit, too many emails to respond to, sessions to shoot, backpacks to pack, homework to work on, stories to read, etc, etc, etc…

Now, here we are – mere hours before the deadline for the April blog and I have to be honest – I was so super close to not getting this one done as well. The theme for this month is “life” and when I first read it, my initial thought was, “How on earth can I photograph pure and utter chaos?!” Because, if we’re talking about my life, that’s what would need to be represented. If we’re being honest. I had ideas of taking shots of my of piles of laundry, dishes in the sink, barbies and animal figures strewn all over the floor – we can all relate to that interpretation of “life,” right?

Then, early this week, the word “life” was brought into glaring perspective for me and so many others throughout the world. And I thought, not only do I have to do this blog, but it has now taken on a whole new meaning. Yes, my life is crazy. Most days, I wake up with thoughts of when my head will hit the pillow again that night, as there are never enough hours in the day to get everything done, let alone get enough sleep! There is the laundry, the dishes, the toys, the mess, the noise. Everyday I forget at least one thing I was supposed to do, most days I forget more than one. Honestly, I rarely feel like I’ve got this whole thing under control!

But then the horrific tragedy in Boston happened and all of that stuff didn’t seem to matter so much anymore. It was just another all too frequent reminder that what really matters are the little things, and most of all, the little people.

So, my “life” blog circle post has just one image, but it’s a special one for me and one that represents one of the most important little people in my life. Everyday for his nap, I let my little guy fall asleep in my bed. I know it’s not the “right” thing to do, but since my desk is currently set up in my room and I always work during nap, it’s a way he gets to sleep close to mama. And I love having him there. Everyday it’s the same. He acts out very elaborate stories with his “guys” and everyday I tell him I’m going to take them away if he keeps playing with them, but both of us know I never will. After about fifteen to twenty minutes, the voices of his guys start to get quieter and their battles become calmer. His eyes start to get heavy, his breathing starts to steady, and other than the occasional shift, his body gets still. Then, he sleeps. And everyday, I walk over and kiss his sweet cheeks, smooth his hair and wonder how I got so lucky to be his mommy. Some days, I even climb in and snuggle with him for a few minutes and just hold my baby.

This is what my life is really all about.

Next month, I hope to do lots more with the pictures for the blog circle, but baby steps, right? :) Now, the next photographer in the circle is my dear friend Robin Hansen from Picsy Photography – to see how she interpreted the “life” theme, click HERE!

Steph, this is such a powerful life post. You words are touching, and I’m sure hit close to home for so many readers. I love every little detail of Eli sleeping on his tummy with his guys close by.

Stephanie, you literally brought me to tears. I’m sure lack of sleep has something to do with it, but your post is so honest and heartfelt. I loved it!
